Top prize for Innovation

People who love using computers often complain about the mouse. It doesn’t take much effort to push it around, but if you’ve been using the mouse for hours your arm may begin to cry out for relief.

Now comes the K-mat to solve the problem. This ergonomically designed mouse pad, which frees up desk space and combats arm strain has been awarded a top prize in the UK’s biggest innovation competition (South East Innovation 99), as one of the most commercially viable products.
It beat 160 other entrants to win £500 in cash, £2000 worth of accounting advice and a return trip for two to Cherbourg.

Instead of a desk bound mouse pad taking up space and having to be dugout from under piles of paper when you want to use it, the K-mat fits snugly over your thigh. Soft guard rails around the edges keep the mouse within bounds and help stop it falling off when you need to use the keyboard.

Says inventor, Nicholas Mark: “Most modern software has become mouse-driven. Even if you just do word processing, you use the mouse about 30 percent of the time, and perhaps 95 percent on the internet.
If a mouse is used in the normal way on top of a desk, even at times when the mouse is idle (i.e. when you simply hold the mouse while reading something on the screen) your arm remains tense, as it’s stretched out to reach the mouse. When you’re using the mouse with K-mat, the upper arm is relaxed and the forearm is resting on your lap.”

With this product the arm is not extended, but is in a neutral position, with the elbow bent and resting naturally at a 90-degree angle. This helps provide a comfortable and correct working posture, thus reducing the strain to the arm, which can occur after prolonged use of a mouse on a normal mouse pad.
Leaning forward to reach the mouse can lead to back pain, but with k-mat the user can keep the mouse within easy reach.

Not only is it more relaxing and comfortable to use, it allows you to sit further back from the screen which some people may find more suitable for their eyes, particularly as modern screens are steadily increasing in size.

It appeals to all intensive mouse users. It’s great for the internet, image editing, desktop publishing, drawing and of course games.

K-mat fits snugly over your thigh, and is predicted to become the latest fashion accessory for computer users everywhere.
